Golden Oldies

Rawlings announced the National League gold gloves today, with Greg Maddux picking up #16, tying him with JIm Kaat for most times winning the award. Omar Vizquel picked up his eleventh. Like yesterday, I find it hard to believe that two fielders so along in years are really the best defensive players at their position. Would you really take Vizquel over Furcal or Everett based on defense right now?

There were a couple of youngsters as well. Orlando Hudson won the award at second base, and Albert Pujols won his first.

This is the problem I always have with the gold glove award. It seems that if somebody has a fantastic year, they get noticed. If they have another fantastic year, they might get awarded. If they have a third one, they pretty much have their 1st or 2nd gold glove. After that, they're it....until somebody else has 2-3 years of fantastic D at that position. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how it seems. Usually it seems more reputation based, than other awards.

Until Furcal can make accurate throws on a more consistent basis, I think Vizquel should be ahead of him. Everett is a little tricker, as he has both range and reliability working in his favor. Not that I place much faith in these awards since the Palmeiro Incident, but I'd have voted for Everett.

Adam Everett was far and away the best fielder in all of baseball using pretty much any metric you choose. Furcal was actually near the bottom in runs prevented, but his cannon arm sticks in people's memories. Andruw Jones and Brad Ausmus are also coasting on their reputations at this point - neither merited a Gold Glove this year. Vizquel's award is the most egregious, though. Adam Everett should have 2 by now - he probably won't get his first until Vizquel retires.

What a joke. The Gold Gloves are the biggest sham awards of them all. This voting is just... just... LAZY. That's the only way I can describe it. You're clearly not thinking very hard about your vote when you just hand it to the same few guys that have won it before, regardless of who actually had the best season. Andruw Jones should be receiving them well after he retires, based on the reputation he acquired in his first few seasons. The Everett snub is reprehensible and the voters should be ashamed of themselves.

At least you know who voted in these awards. With the MVP and Cy Young, you aren't allowed to know the names and employers of all the voters. Votes will be cast strictly on politics or campaign highlights (or lack thereof)on ESPN, often without the voter ever having seen a candidate work or knowing much about him. Millions of dollars & eternal fame lie in the balance, but no one has done anything to stop it. Those who could do something about it won't, mostly for fear of financial repercussions.

i think bobby abreu should have won all three outfield gold gloves in both leagues.

the award is a complete joke, and after last year, i no longer reckognize it.
