A's to Jays
Sports Illustrated is reporting that Frank Thomas is about to sign with the Toronto Blue Jays:
The Toronto Blue Jays are closing in a deal with free agent Frank Thomas for $23 million over two years, SI.com has learned.
Thomas hit 39 home runs and had 114 RBIs in a major comeback season in 2006, leading the Oakland A's into the American League Championship Series after signing with them for only $500,000 guaranteed plus $3 million in incentives.
The Blue Jays designated hitters hit for average and power, but didn't do a great job of getting on base. Thomas should improve both OBA and slugging at the position.
It looks like the Athletics might replace Frank with Barry Bonds, keeping Barry at home in the Bay Area.
This makes Wells expendable, but certainly doesn't require the Jays to trade him. We can just sit back and wait for the price on Wells to rise, and, if it doesn't, keep him and have a nasty 3-4-5 punch (Wells, Thomas, Glaus).
Thomas looked terrible in the playoffs, unable to handle the high heat. Has there been any explanation for that? Was he injured? At his age, I would be very worried about slowing bat speed.
I'd say that by the time the A's faced Detroit, his weakness were well known and the Tigers pitched him there consistently. The Big Hurt was terrific but he was prone to being late on the good high heat. He's also a dead pull hitter - so it's away, away, away. He can still murder the ball out over the plate - no doubt but considering Chavez did nothing behind him, it made it easy to force Thomas to swing at pitches he might otherwise pass on.
I am sick of players who talk about how they need more money in their later years to be secure. Of course I am for all players making as much as they want BUT why is loyality such a non factor today. Thomas realizes he is going to be over 40 when his next contract ends..he said he has to make as much as he can. MY GOD he has made over 75 million dollars...so would it have killed him to stay in Oakland where he supposedly enjoyed himself a great deal? It like Glavine leaving the Braves for more money with the Mets. Glavine as made over $120 million dollors so how much more money did he need. Did he not feel some loyality to the players he came up with. In the look run we are all whores but when you reach the point in life where you no longer have to consider how much stuff costs can't you at least start to value how much your relationships are worth.

John, did you just get out of a bad relationship? Is everything okay, man? Do you have someone you can talk to? Seriously, it sounds like you aren't just talking about baseball.
Besides, you haven't seen Frank's alimony bill.
Considering that the owners are tring to make as much as they can too, what's wrong with players wanting their share of that? Nobody ever bought a ticket to watch J.P. Ricciardi work the phones.
