Santana Leaves No Doubt
Johan Santana wins his second Cy Young award, and for the second time it's unanimous.
Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers is the only pitcher to win a Cy Young award three times unanimously, and he did it when it was given to only one pitcher in both leagues.
I suspect as long as he's healthy, Santana is going to compete for the award for many more years.
The surprise for me is Wang beating out Halladay for second place. The voting is here. I find it fascinating. Wang pulled down more second place votes than Halladay, but Halladay appears on more ballots. I get the feeling that there's a group of writers who still put a premium on wins, and a group that puts a premium on what the pitcher accomplishes. Those two pretty even, with the wins group still dominating a bit. I suspect that will disappear in a few more years.

I'd love to hear a defense of Wang as the No. 2 from one of the guys who voted for him.
"Let's see...Doc Halladay's ERA, k/9, k/bb, bb/9, WHIP, baa, and OBA are noticably better, he has one fewer loss, more quality starts, about the same IP, and worse run support...but that Wang, he won 3 more games. He totally deserves 2nd place."
Not worth getting too worked up about, and don't get me wrong, the kid had a good season...he deserved 3rd place. But this is stupid.
The defense? He's a Yankee, and he deserves accolades! Just like Jeter winning the gold glove and probably the mvp
For something not worth getting worked up about you sure seemed worked up about it.
This is as outrageous as Pete Schourek and Tom Glavine placed 2 and 3 ahead of Hideo Nomo, despite Nomo clearly having a superior season to both of them!
Remember that? Huh? Those places that didn't win the award?
Are you serious? Are you complaining about the placing and the showing in the balloting? This could quite possibly be the most meaningless debate achieved by man.
Hmm...didn't realize commenting on a story somebody else posted qualified as getting worked up...
And yeah, it is a largely meaningless debate...except given that it reflects a problem in the way the voters think...it's worth at least noting.
Christ, did I really sound that pissed off or passionate? If so, you clearly don't know what I'm capable of in full-blown rant mode. :)
