Hammering Out a Deal

The St. Louis Cardinals made Chris Carpenter a much richer man today.

Chris Carpenter and the St. Louis Cardinals agreed Monday to a five-year contract that guarantees the 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner about $65 million.

He'll finish his current contract, making $16 million over the next two seasons. After that, he'll bring in about $16 million a year for three years, with a club option for a fourth season. That's sounds like a very good deal for the Cardinals. Over the last three seasons, he's third in the majors in ERA and second in winning percentage among pitchers with 300 IP.

It's an unusual and somewhat risky move -- a guy already signed for TWO more years, getting an extension that doesn't start til he turns 34. But Carpenter has been one of the best pitchers in baseball for three seasons now, and been mostly healthy and durable.

the cards are making so very solid baseball moves. they never seem to out of contention. starting to have a angel infield. i wonder if they trade rolen?

look at the moves the cubs have made. very foolish, soriano cf yikes could be fun to watch on sportscenter all the bloopers and can derick lee return to form?

carpenter could have commanded much more on the open market in two years given the past few years trend of rising (alot) salaries but it is obvious that he would prefer to continue to win. Him staying shows other players that STL is one of the best places to go if you want to win.

Excellent move by him and the cards.

i am a met fan and was at game 6 of the NLDS when they beat him...he still looked really impressive.
