Stewart Watch

Dave Stewart, the former pitcher who reached fame with the Oakland Athletics blogs at Sports Action Daily. His latest post is on players to watch for 2007. There's not a lot of in depth analysis, but I do agree with this bit on Barry Bonds:

Last year was a "take a season off" kinda year for Barry. However, he's been flying under the radar so far this season, which means there's less pressure and fewer distractions for him. A more focused Bonds will equal more productivity... and being so close to breaking the HR record won't hurt either. I expect Barry to have an unbelievable season.

Barry appears to be healthy. I wouldn't be surprised if he hit 40 home runs this season.

Bonds...doesn't play sunday. Doesn't play day games after night games. Has known knee issues, will probably take a dozen games off just because. And has significant risk of a more serious injury. No lineup protection, will see junk all year.

I just don't see him hitting 40.

Cephyn hits it head on.
Bonds will see junk when he sees an AB at all.
I can't see 40.

However, I can see 25.

He hit 26 last year while he was hurt. 40 isn't out of the question at all. I do expect an 1.100 OPS again though. Last year was the first season in 14 season, he didn't have a 1000 OPS. It was .999. He's still really good.

You mean he's not hurt yet. It's a long season. Especially for a guy heading into his mid-forties. The most he's got to give is 130 games and 30 homers.
