Suspended

The Cubs and Pirates found their game suspended last night after the Cubs rallied to take the lead in the top of the seventh inning:

Here is how the new procedure works: Once a game becomes official -- 4 1/2 innings if the home team is leading, five full if the visitors are leading -- and is called, it is picked up at precisely the same point at a later date as opposed to simply ending, if any of the following applies:

A. The score is tied.

B. The visiting team takes the lead in the top half of an inning, and the bottom half of that inning does not get completed.

In this case, it was option B.

Actually, option B isn't new, that's been in place a long time. Option A is new this year. If the Pirates had been able to hold Chicago to two runs in the seventh, the game would be a Pirates win.

there was actually a torrential downpour already when Cliff Floyd launched his 2-run homer into the night that put the Cubs up 6-5 in the 7th (which makes his HR even more impressive).

what I want to know is can the Pirates trot out any lineup they want now when the 7th resumes, or does it have to be the same lineup that they had going last night?

They need to pick up the game as if it was never interrupted. Same lineup, and people can't come back in if they've been replaced.

Would make for an interesting scenario if a suspended game were to occur during a no-hitter or perfect game. Then again, no manager in his right mind would leave/put his starting pitcher into the resumed game.
