Trivia Night

Jarrod Saltalamacchia entered the record books last night as the major league player with the longest last name, 14 characters. If you include spaces, William Van Landingham and John Van Benschoten would also qualify, but for pure alphabetic characters, Saltalamacchia is the one. I was watching the Braves game with the mute button on while I was doing my radio show, and they seemed to be making a big deal at the end of his first plate appearance. I didn't know why at the time, but it must have been for the record. They showed his family in the stands cheering, including what looked like a new born baby.

Jarrod also had the distinction of debuting on his birthday.

A mute button is a great feature when two of the three announcers are Chris Berman and Steve Phillips.

Yep, Berman was excited about the length of Salty's name.

I always feel sorry for the uniform folks, like back when the Cubs had both Garcieparra and Grudzialanek (both of whose names I think I just misspelled). Really, that must be an interesting piece of work to fit Saltalamacchia on a uniform.

Yeah, ESPN had 3 guys in the booth, and none of them were play-by-play announcers. Seems like most of the game, Berman was just chatting with Orel, and oh-by-the-way, occasionally mentioning something about the game in progress.

Pathetic, even by ESPN's lower standards these days.

I could only view the Comcast Philly broadcast of the game. the announcers did not mention any kind of "record"; but it was funny to watch his family stand up and almost go bonkers thinking his first swing would go over the centerfield fence for a Homer.

Chris Wheeler mentioned that Berman couldnt wait for Shane Victorino to bat against the hawaiin pitcher.
