Two-two-out Rallies

The Mariners come back to defeat the Yankees 3-2, wasting a good start by Matt DeSalvo. Farnsworth gets the first two outs in the eighth, only to give up a single, steal and single to tie the game. The with two out in the ninth, Beltre homers off Rivera, and the Mariners hold on with Putz for the win. The W puts the Mariners just 1/2 game behind the Angels for first place in the AL West.

Try to catch highlights from that game. The stolen base against Farnsworth was one of the worst calls I've ever seen; the tag was on while he was, quite literally, a foot or two away from the bag. I say this as a Red Sox fan, the Yankees got royally screwed.

That said, they also went something to the tune of 1/12 W/RISP. So they kind of dug their own grave. The ump just had the assist.

I don't think the Ump could see Bloomquist's hands or the 2nd base bag. It looked like Cano was in between the Ump and the bag, and the Ump just had to guess where his hands were.

Yes, but Bloomquist isn't Stretch Armstrong. He was seriously a couple feet away from the bag, as the other josh said. It was a ridiculous call.

Wow...yeah, that's actually even worse then I thought. Just...wow. That might be closer to 3 feet.

As a Yankee fan, I do have to agree with Other Josh that the miserable performance with RISP keeps all the blame from resting on the ump's shoulders. What a shame to waste the excellent rookie start.
Also, the M's have a really bad line-up, which makes it all the more upsetting that they torched Kei Igawa the other night.

The call at second base was a joke. But it's funny how calls on the bases get a lot more scrutiny than ball-and-strike calls. The overhead camera and the various electronic gadgets make it clear that pitches well off the corners are often called strikes.

This gets excused as "consistent" even when the pitches are well off the plate and the calls significantly affect the outcome of the game. I think the umps have caught onto the fact that they will catch little flack from the media for calling a 22-inch plate.

That call was so bad, it's amazing no one got ejected for arguing it.
