Post Season Schedule

Earlier today I wondered if there would be a huge break between the LCS and the World Series this year, given the MLB is starting the series later. Every series is going to start later than usual. One good thing about this new schedule is that there will always be a travel day between games four and five of the LDS:

The 2007 postseason will begin on Wednesday, October 3rd, with three of the four Division Series in play. One of the two American League Division Series will begin on Thursday, October 4th. Any decisive fifth game of a Division Series will now be preceded by an off-day. All Division Series games, which will continue to follow a 2-2-1 format, will predominantly be airing on TBS with additional games on sister network TNT.

That's a good decision. And although they were trying to avoid games on Friday, they end up with two on the first Friday of the LCS.

How could having another day off between games 4 & 5 of the LDS be a good thing? There's already way to many days off in the playoffs that's its hardly the same game - pitching depth doesn't matter. Ideally there should be 6 games a week (unless you clinch early) just like the regular season.

Since this doesn't seem to be feasible because of television and scheduling concerns. the following should be put in place to artifically lower the dominance of top line pitching.

1. Pitchers must have three potential games off between starts. Game one pitcher can't start until game 5 regardless of how many off days there are in between. It's based upon potential games, not actual games, so if Philadelphia sweeps the first round , either the game 1 or game 2 starter will be available to start game 1 of the next series. There can be a rule that if a starting pitcher goes less than three innings he can come back one game earlier than normal. If a pitcher who's previous outing was a start, pitches in relief the next game he can start gets pushed back one game.

2. Relief pitchers can only pitch a maximum of three games in a row throughout the playoffs. Because were looking at potential games instead of actual games, any team that clinches early will have its entire roster of relief pitchers ready for game 1 of the following series.

3. In the event of an injury to a pitcher, a team may elect to bring any other pitcher on the roster back one game early, but the injured pitcher cannot play for the remainder of the post-season and he can't be replaced on the roster.

4. If its at least the 4th game of a 5 game series or the 5th game of a 7 game series and a team is facing elimination, then rules 1 and 2 don't apply and the team can pitch anybody except someone who was previously declared injured under rule 3. However, if this team goes on to win the series, the normal rules resume for the start of the next series.
