Thomas at 500

Sorry, I missed Frank Thomas' 500th home run earlier today. Congratulations to the Big Hurt on that milestone!

Update: Peter Schmuck notes that milestones aren't what they used to be.

The great hunt for round numbers has been going on since the game's Golden Age, and there was a time when fans from all over the major leagues would stop and express their collective awe at a 300th victory or a 500th home run.

That, of course, was before it happened every day.

Oh wah wah wah. After this aberration is over, we probably won't see another 500 hitter for at least 3 years and maybe as many as 6 or 7. There were about 6 different players who got to 500 in the early sixties, too.

Why does everyone need to whine about everything? What a Schmuck.

not for another 3 years? lets not be that pessimistic, take a good look at the list:

Thome - 472
Manny - 470
ARod - 464
Sheffield - 455

500 home runs not being what it used to be, I'm on board there. 300 wins, though? Clemens and Maddux are unquestionably awesome, Glavine's had a very good and very long career, Randy Johnson might make it and he's no slouch, and Mussina has a remote shot at it.

After that, nothing. Since Andy Pettite's birthday a couple weeks ago, there are no pitchers under 35 with even 150 wins.

Oops, just realized that list was from the beginning of the season:

ARod - 492
Thome - 482
Manny - 481
Sheff - 472

And now for some up and comers:

Delgado - 418
Chipper - 370
Andruw Jones - 354
Vlad - 352

Although there will be a dropoff from this year's pace, we're still looking at about 1 500 HR guy every year for the next couple years...and then there will be a big drop off

On the other hand, not many players gets to 500 HRs with a .423 career OBP.

300 wins is still a big milestone. After Glavine and Johnson (whose back might give out before he makes it), we aren't going to see any 300 winners for many years if not decades.

The fact that we have two guys pitching now with 340 or more wins is something you can tell your grandchildren about.
