Good Weather for Fish
It's been raining hard in Philadelphia since I turned the game on in the bottom of the fifth. At that point, the game became official, with the Marlins leading 1-0. But despite the soaking rain, the umpires have not called for the tarps. In the bottom of the sixth, Greg Dobbs hits a bases loaded ground rule double to tie the game at two. I wonder if the Marlins feel a bit screwed here. It's clearly awful conditions in which they're playing, but with the Phillies in a division and wild card race, I'm sure the umps want to do everything they can to play a full nine innings. Of course, with modern stadiums and great drainage systems, it's easier to play through this kind of weather.
Update: The Marlins score two in the top of the ninth as the rain finally let up and win 4-2. The Phillies fall back to third place, four game behind the Mets. The Marlins pen didn't allow a hit over three innings, but they did issue three walks while striking out five.

That ground-rule double rubbed my pet peeve the wrong way again. Why aren't the umps allowed to score the runner on a ground-rule double when it's an obvious case? Rowand could have crawled the last thirty feet home if that ball had stayed in play.
I know, they want to avoid arguments. But we expect umps to make tough judgment calls all the time. It would have to be a "clear and convincing" case, to use NFL-speak. But there's no reason to send a runner back to third on a ground-rule double when everybody in the park can see he would have scored.
