Staying With Youth
Dodgers fans should find this good news:
Citing the high asking prices for top players on the trade market and the lack of quality among free agents, Dodgers General Manager Ned Colletti said today that he wouldn't "make a deal to make a deal."
That would leave the Dodgers with a team that once again would be short on experience, something Colletti said he didn't mind. Manager Joe Torre echoed similar thoughts.
"There's potential for change, but as we look at the young players that we played a lot this past year, we're less likely to fill in [positions with veterans] as much as we have in the past and more likely we'll give the younger players greater opportunity," Colletti said. "I'm curious to see how our young players, who really had a chance this past year to play full-time, I'm curious to see what another year does."

Damn.
I'm still not convinced that Cash couldn't pull a Matsui, Giambi, and Damon for Loney, Kemp, and Broxton though. Throw in a couple of cases of green tea, and Sleepy Joe convinces Colletti to pull the trigger. No matter what they say, those 2 guys love those vets too much!
Typical arrogant Yankee fan, that's why they garner so much respect.
I'll believe that Colletti has ceased being an idiot when I hear the magic words: "Juan Pierre has been unconditionally released, and God have mercy on any team that decides to save money by adding him to their lineup." Assuming, of course, that he doesn't take two or three more seasons to cease throwing good outs after bad.
Wow, should the Dodgers throw in Clayton Kershaw and Chad Billingsley too?
Hopefully Colletti sticks to his guns and doesn't acquiesce to the Ken Rosenthals of the world. Seriously, trying to justify the Reds signing Francisco Cordero?
What the Dodgers need to do is not go sign an overpriced free agent, but get rid of the dead wood they have right now and just complete the youth revolution. Get rid of Nomar, he's totaly wasted now, and give Andy Laroche an extended period at third. Get rid of Luis Gonzalez, and give more time to Ethier and Kemp at the corners. Finally, get rid of the clubhouse cancer known as Jeff Kent and put in Tony Abreu in there, see if he can cut it as a regular player. It's just too bad about Pierre, because they can't move him now (no team in their right minds would wanna TOUCH that contract), and I don't think the dodgers got any hot shot CF prospect anyway. So they might as well keep Pierre and hope they at least get the average Pierre season outta him.
And some people have no sense of humor . . . and/or haven't followed the decisions of the Torres/Colletti's of the world very closely, or at all.

They don't need one:
LF: Gonzalez
CF: Kemp
RF: Ethier
OK, so it's a weak defensive outfield, and Gonzalez is at best an average hitter now and will probably deteriorate--so what? It'll still be leaps and bounds better than watching Pierre blow another 520 outs with an adjusted OPS+ of 70-85 and playing a mediocre center field. The numbers say that Pierre is a replacement level player (if that)--it's criminal to even think of letting him sabotage this team for four more years. Pierre's salary is gone--it's time for the Dodgers to acknowledge that, cut Pierre loose, and use the freed playing time to let an actual major league outfielder show what he can do.
