More Santana Talk

Joe Christensen notes the Yankees are still interested in Johan Santana if they can move Hideki Matsui. From Joe:

Another development to follow is the Hiroki Kuroda derby. The Dodgers and Mariners are both trying to sign the Japanese pitcher, and the team that misses out might make a last-ditch effort for Santana. Once Kuroda lands, the Twins should have a crystal clear picture of Santana's trade market, and I'm guessing they will take their best offer, with the whole thing settled by Christmas.

It seems the Twins are being very patient, waiting for teams to be out of options with Santana the only great pitcher left.

Just another example of how the Yankees actually do have a spending limit. If they didn't, the rotation would already be stocked with a veteran starter or two (Silva and Colon?), Hideki's salary wouldn't conflict with Santana's, and they'd have a first baseman who could both hit AND field.

Even with the Yankees, you have to consider salaries.

Or it could further point out that Hank Steinbrenner is not very bright.

When a team's spending limit is 100 million dollars more than twenty-eight other teams, their failure to find a first baseman who can both hit and field is not due to money.

How you propose the Yankees have fixed that last year though JC?

I'm starting to get the feeling that Hank and the Yanks are simply trying to keep this game of poker go on long enough for Boston to drop a true bombshell of a deal (like say... Buchholz / Ellsbury / Lowrie / Anderson for Santana) or for the Twins to overplay their hand and end up not being able to deal him.

Dave,

Do you not like Erik Bedard or do you think he won't be traded.

Perhaps you like Bedard but don't see him as a great pitcher?

There is also a limit to free agent signings, which tends to put a cap on how many players the Yankees can bring in each year.
