Killing the Starter's ERA

When we played Strat-O-Matic baseball in college, we often awarded a Getty No-Lead at the end of the game. The Getty No-Lead was given out at the end of Yankees broadcasts at that time to a player who helped win the game. We gave it to the reliever who poured gasoline on the fire.

Phil Dumatrait earned it today. Tom Gorzelanny pitched poorly today, allowing six hits and four walks in 2 1/3 innings, leaving the game trailing 4-0 and leaving the bases loaded. Dumatrait comes in and gives up a bases clearing double before retiring the next two batters. That makes Gorzelanny's line the worst it could be, with all seven earned runs charged to him. The Cubs still lead 7-0 in the fourth.

Update: The double really hurts as the Pirates come back and score five runs in the bottom of the fourth. If Dumatrait does his job, the Pirates have the lead.

Update: The Pirates come back to score seven runs and now trail 8-7 in the top of the seventh. Ted Lilly has a poor outing and now has a 9.72 ERA on the season. Regression to the mean is coming on with a vengence.

Update: The Pirates tie the game at eight on a two-out error by DeRosa with a man on second. It was an easy ground ball that just ticked off Mark's glove. It's the third error by the Cubs today, but just the first unearned run allowed.

And somehow this turned into a 2 run game.

And somehow this turned into a 2 run game. Gorzelanny might earn an ND yet.
