Shutting Down the Yankees

The Texas Rangers held the Yankees to just one run on an Alex Rodriguez homer and take the game 2-1. Feldman allowed four hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings, including Jason Giambi's first triple since 2002. The Yankees, however, were 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position. The Rangers bullpen did not allow a hit in 2 1/3 innings of work while striking out three.

Mike Mussina pitched a good game, just not good enough tonight. He allowed both Rangers runs while walking two and striking out eight. The Yankees lose a chance to gain in the wild card race as Boston falls to Tampa Bay.

Don't forget to mention that the Texas Rangers are now just 1.5 games behind the Yankees in that same wildcard race, and that they could actually better the Yanks' record if they sweep this series. Also noteworthy: they are now just 6.5 games behind a slumping Angels team with a 4-game series approaching in Arlington, TX. The Halos have lost 4 of their last 5.

Love your blog. Keep up the great work!

Such a shame to see all big money teams (except the Tigres) struggling and all the perennial losers surging.

Felt strange watching that game last night. Are these the Rangers? They've only played one game all year that was lower-scoring, a 2-0 win over Seattle May 7. Texas usually scores a bunch and gives up a bunch.

Somehow the team managed a 14-13 record in June, though they put up the second-worst ERA in the league, an unsightly 5.08. If Texas could just get average pitching, they'd win the division by six games.
