Not Just Another Team

River Ave. Blues on the Yankees-BOA deal:

It's hard to understate the impact the Yankees have on the sports business world. Even as a fourth-place team, they're commanding more money for this non-naming rights sponsorship deal than any other team could ever dream of getting. In effect, they're receiving the Marlins' payroll annually from Bank of American in exchange for signage and sponsorship. Wrap your mind around that one for a second. Perhaps Chris Smith would like to amend his argument claiming the Yankees are just another team.

So the Yankee have payroll freeing up as Giambi, Abreu and Mussina's contracts end, plus their getting a superstar's salary from Bank of America. I would guess that signing Sabathia, Teixeira and Manny Ramirez would turn the team around in a hurry, especially if the young pitchers mature.

Problem is, Manny is old and will want a big contract and the Yanks already have a DH, and Sabathia and Tex might not want to go to NY.

for as much as I would like to bash the Yanks here....I will just say simply this is the way the 35 year Boss Steinbrenner era ends....in 4th place. The natural death of the Yankees is rather yawn inspiring, isn't it? The Yankee brand is a global phenomenon. Don't be surprised my friends....with YES channel....the new stadium....and the retirement of The Boss,...don't be surprised if the Yankees are sold within the next 3 to 5 years.

sabernar makes good points, but I feel fairly confident that CC will go for the $$. The Yankees can choose between re-upping Giambi and bringing Manny aboard, and they might well look to trade Matsui to the west coast or let Abreu walk, so there shouldn't be a serious problem of 'too many DHs'. I'd guess the Bombers will be contenders again right away.
