Giant Move

Ken Rosenthal reports that Edgar Renteria signed with the Giants, two-years, $18.5 million. It's his fifth team in six years. He's also getting just a slight pay raise, as his Red Sox contract paid him $36 million over four years.

I never know what the Giants are doing. This makes them younger, simply because Vizquel was so old. Renteria, however, has an OPS+ under 100 in three of the last five seasons. He'll be better than Omar offensively, but the move doesn't improve the team that much.

I think it's a sign of Vizquel is done, Bocock is ridiculous, nobody's ready in the farm system, and no clear free agent choices next season. All in all, it's not exciting, but it's "okay"...it's not Zito!

It certianly doesn't improve the team by $9M worth. Another crazy move by the Giants.

Renteria $9+ m? They must have outbid everyone else by about $9M.

Look at what the SS did collectively for the Giants last season and you will see that it is a huge upgrade offensively. Also, it should be noted that OPS+ is not position adjusted, so the proper level is not 100 for SS but below that. Not sure how one would calculate that except by averaging all the starting SS that qualified for batting title.

And it's a guaranteed improvement, even if Renteria hit has poorly as last season, whereas the Giants have no idea whether Burriss will continue to develop starting at SS, whether offensively or defensively, he was noted even when drafted as a future 2B, and he has virtually no power at all, though Lansford thinks he has potential if trained correctly. That is worth money, because the Giants are not that far from competitiveness.

In fact, I believe that this puts them back as a competitive .500 team, which is enough to compete in the NL West, with the other teams imploding. They were already playing .500 for the last two months with basically the same roster as last season, the people we lost didn't contribute much, but the people we gained (both off-season and late season) could contribute over a full season.

Well even if your dreams come true I doubt they had to had to offer anywhere near $9M - Renteria's agent probably couldn't believe his eyes and ears.
