Visualizing Hitters

Many years ago Bill James often talked about players in terms of their batting average as a percent of their offense. This concept proved useful in an era when batting averages were known, but OBP and Slugging were tougher to find.

I sometimes return to this concept as a way of visualizing the offense of a hitter. Using the Wolfram Language, I was able to plot a few players in terms of ovals. I’d like to know your opinion, and if anyone has experience with the Wolfram language, I’d also like to pick your brain.

Another 1-0

The Nationals beat the Cardinals 1-0 Wednesday afternoon as Max Scherzer pitched six strong innings for the win, and the bullpen allowed five base runners but no runs. Scherzer’s ERA drops to 1.80 as he pitches his second short shutout in a row.

This was the tenth 1-0 game in the majors this season. There were eleven such games in the majors in the pandemic shorted 2020 season. The Day by Day Database goes back to 1920, and the record for 1-0 games in a season was 82 in 1968, when there were only 20 teams. The record for a 30 team league is 69 in 2014. The current pace would put the total of 1-0 in the mid 80s. I don’t think this will hold up as the weather improves, but we’ll see.

Long Ball Losses

For the second day in a row, a team hit four home runs in a game and lost. On Thursday, the Giants hit four home runs against the Mariners and fell 8-7. On Friday night, the Rockies hit four home runs against the Dodgers (all in one inning) and lost 11-6. Up until the seventh inning, Dodgers starter Trevor Bauer no-hit Colorado. He then gave up a single, home run, walk, and a home run before leaving the game.

It is very unusual for a team to hit four home runs and lose. The Day by Day Database goes back to 1920, and in that time there were 6625 team games in which the team hit at least four home runs. The winning percentage in those games was .850. If instead, you look at exactly four home runs being hit, there are 4950 games, with an .834 winning percentage. Two days into the season we saw two rare events.

Best Batter Today

The Baseball Musings Day by Day Database offers a daily power-ranking of batters. Batters gain or lose points based on a batter version of a game score. Both regular season and post-season games count. In activity leads to an erosion of scores, as it’s tough be to bet best batter if one is not playing. Since the erosion starts later for hitter who participate in the playoffs, the top of the leader board at the start of the season tends to be populated with people who appeared in October.

The rankings are both a long and short term measure of success. Think of the top of the list as good hitters who are hot. As the 2021 season gets underway, Corey Seager of the Dodgers tops the chart. He finished 2020 hitting .328/.425/.746 in the post-season, with a .400/.556/.700 line in the World Series. He is followed by Jose Ramirez of the Indians, Freddie Freeman of the Braves, Marcell Ozuna of the Braves, and Jose Abreu of the White Sox.

The big shortstop contracts this winter went to Fernando Tatis, Jr. currently ranked 19th, and Francisco Lindor, currently ranked 33rd. I’ll keep an eye on this all season.

Ranking Negro League Players

538 does a nice job of comparing Negro league players to both current MLB players and MLB Hall of Famers using WAR/162 games. There’s a great graph showing the distribution of this statistic among the three groups. The final result is an interactive set of cards for the best players of the Negro Leagues, showing their strengths and weakness with comparisons to MLB players. This is a great research resource.

League Retention

With older major league players failing to secure long-term free agent contracts over the last few years, I wondered if year-to-year retention of players went down in recent seasons. For season, a query generated how many of those players appeared in at least one game, and how many of those returned for at least one game the next season. From these two numbers, query catcalled the percentage of players returning. Both the output of the query and a graph representing the year to year percentages can be seen in this spreadsheet.

Sometimes you start to look at one thing and find another that is just as interesting. The percentage of players retained jumps in 1960, 1961, 1968, 1976, 1992, and 1997. Each of these seasons preceded an expansion year. Teams did not want to expose prospects to the draft by giving them major league experience, so a few stayed in the minors a bit longer than they otherwise might, and veteran players hung around rather than being moved out for a youngster.

The study cover 1920 to 2019, the range of years in the Day by Day Database with a following season. In the 1920s, retention rates sit in the mid to upper 60s, then rise into the 70s in the 1930s. It could be that the depression drove a number of minor league teams out of business or more firmly into the grasp of major league organizations. This would have given players fewer options of finding work in an independent minor league, forcing them to stay in the majors.

The percentage hit a high point in 1940 at 75.3% of players retained, then World War II sent that plunging. In 1942, only 58.8% of players were retained.

The retention percentage quickly bounced back, rising to 73.6% by 1948. This held steady until the expansion 1960s. The chart shows a six-year moving average at 80% first in 1969, and it stays above 80% for twenty years.

Why the rise in retention? I believe that four expansions in seventeen increased the number of job available, without necessarily increasing the talent available to fill those jobs. Given the poor quality of expansion teams, it wasn’t like there was a ton of major league talent sitting at AAA just waiting for a chance. So teams kept marginal talent around longer because they needed it.

After 1984 the retention rate starts dropping again. The Caribbean starts contributing more and more players to the majors, helping to make up for the lack of talent. Note that the moving average of the retention rate even drops in the 1990s, despite two expansions providing a boost.

Around 2008, the retention rate flat lines at about 77%. There is no clear evidence that shorter term free agent contracts in the last few years really changed the retention rate. Once thing that is pretty clear, however, is expansion pushes rates higher. If the MLBPA wants their veteran members to play longer, they should push for another expansion.

FG to MLBPA

Congratulations to Craig Edwards, who moves from FanGraphs to do analytic research for the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA).

“Craig has demonstrated a keen ability to identify and evaluate both on-field and economic trends in our industry,” Executive Director Tony Clark said. “He’ll take an integral role in supporting our mission to advance and protect Players’ rights, particularly as we approach negotiations for a new Basic Agreement.”

MLBPlayers.com

Good. I hope Craig makes a good case for earlier free agency, or even universal free agency.

Spinning the Spin

Tom Tango explains new observations of pitch spin, based on a statement by Jared Hughes:

“There was absolutely no difference in how the ball was rotating,” Hughes said.

TheAthletic.com

The various radar tracking systems inferred the spin of the ball by calculating back from observations of the balls flight. Statcast now measures spin directly, and Hughes is correct. Baseball Savant how shows both interpretations of spin. I suspect the next step is to see if big gaps in observed and actual spin is good or bad for the pitcher.

Many years ago I attended a baseball research conference that discussed the physics of spin extensively. At the end, they showed a pitch in slow motion that moved very differently than what the spin access would predict. It was clear then that spin access is only one variable in controlling the flight of the ball. Maybe mastering the other variables is what separates the good from the great.

Perception of Players

If you stay home tonight for New Year’s Eve, here’s a way to pass the time. Bill James offers his Perception Deficit Score (PDS) to determine if a hitter was likely overrated or underrated in his career. Note there are follow up articles as well, one showing Steve Garvey being heavily overrated, and one fixing a problem in the system related to Garvey’s Hall of Fame voting results.

Virtual Coaching

Sig Mejdal found a way to help with the Orioles player development despite not being able to attend practices:

But Mejdal stayed in the loop, thanks in part to the latest gadgets in the game – body sensors, bat trackers, force pads and more.

A bit more advanced than Zoom.

“Beyond the fact that there were fewer games, no minor league games in the parks, … we had a full allocation of coaches and a full allocation of whatever tech we have in our system,” Mejdal said in a recent interview with “MASN All Access.”

In his second season as Orioles vice president and assistant general manager of analytics, Mejdal reprised his role of the invisible counselor: collecting and analyzing data to help players fix flaws in their game that had previously gone undetected.

MASNSports.com

This is where Mejdal’s NASA background comes in handy. He also notes how much more this generation of players wants the data:

“It keeps surprising me how quickly the interest from the players for these previously pushed back-on technologies or data or processes or ideas, how rapidly that changes,” Mejdal said. “You can’t be a player today and expect to be all you can be without taking advantage of all the resources available and that includes the technology that’s out there now.”

Part of that comes from Mejdal supplying players with ideas that work.

WAR or WAG

Bill James describes the problem with Wins Above Replacement (WAR) as a problem of comparison derivatives. Since the statistic looks at the difference between the estimate of a player’s runs versus an estimate of a replacement player’s runs, a small error in either estimate can lead to a much larger error overall.

This makes me glad that there are multiple ways to measure WAR. Sometimes I look at one of the WAR measures for a particular player and it seems really off. I’ll look at the other one, and it will match my expectations better. In general, the average of these systems is likely a better estimate that any of the individual ones. It would be good if there were maybe four or five WAR estimates out there, and the average of those would likely be very close to reality.

Fun With Data

Google Data Studio offers a free way to present data. It seems worth learning, and applying it to Musings Marcels data looks like a good place to start. This data presentation contains two pages. The first examines the three-true outcome predictions for batters for 2021. The TTO Score column is a combination of the linear weights for the three events. The second page presents the predicted offensive averages for the players, and you can use a slider to set the minimum number of plate appearances. If people like these, more can be added. Put your suggestions in the comments.

Just Home Runs

The Day by Day Database contains post-season batting events since 2002. In that 19 year span, 2020 leads in percent of runs scored on home runs. Coming into today, of the 204 runs scored, 108 came on home runs, 52.9%. Both runs in the Braves defeat of the Marlins came on solo home runs, pushing the percentage to 53.4%.

Then the Athletics beat the Astros 9-7, with the teams combining for seven home runs. Oakland hit five home runs, contributing seven runs, while the two Astros homers drove in three more. That means of the 222 runs scored, 120 came on homers, or 54.1%. The only other year in that period over 50% was 2017 at 50.9%, 166 of 326 runs on homers.

With the Athletics winning there will be four games played on Thursday.

The Ball Versus the Batter

Exploring Baseball Data with R looks at the reasons behind the 2020 home run rate. The rate is down a bit compared to 2019, but still high compared to recent years. The take away is that the manufacturers appeared to have solved the low drag problem:

What we see is the 2020 ball is somewhat consistent with the 2015 and 2016 balls, but it is clearly less lively than the 2017 and 2019 balls, but more lively than the 2018 ball.

There’s more drag, but batters compensated for that:

But the players continue to hit balls hard and the the rate of of “good” or “barrel” batted balls has shown a consistent rise over the Statcast period.

I find this adjustment fascinating. For years, teams employed defensive shifts that hurt certain batters. They could not adjust to trying to take the ball the other way. Yet, changing the angle of a swing to launch the ball at a different angle seems relatively easy. I think it would be a really great piece for MLB Network or Baseball Tonight to have a slugger show the differences in adjustments to going the other way to simply changing the launch angle.

Where Does Pujols Rank?

Albert Pujols collected an RBI last night, but where he ranks all time is up for debate. He passed Alex Rodriguez, and the article says that Pujols stands second behind Hank Aaron, 2,297 to 2,087. But:

Babe Ruth had 2,214 career RBIs, but he isn’t officially on the career list because RBIs did not become an official stat until 1920, per Elias Sports Bureau research.

ESPN.com

If you look at Baseball-Reference, there is Ruth second with 2,214 RBI.

I have full confidence in the number of RBI credited to Albert Pujols and Alex Rodriguez. During their careers, multiple organizations tracked their accomplishments. In addition to Elias, STATS Inc. scored every pitch of every game at the ball park, and was in contact with the official scorer when there was a discrepancy. Project Scoresheet kept track of events in games. Eventually Sports Info Solutions joined the team. The organizations fact check each other, making the data more reliable.

( I was once scoring a game for STATS during which a pitch went past the catcher with a man on third. The runner tried to score, but the ball bounded back to the catcher, who threw to the pitcher covering for the out. The official scorer announced that the play was a fielder’s choice, but when the IBM system box score appeared at the end of the game, the play was listed as a caught stealing. I pointed it out to the official scorer, who forced a fix.)

Baseball Reference does not just put up numbers drawn from a hat. Over the years, the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) brought together researchers to figure out discrepancies in the old statistical records. In some cases, Elias changed the numbers for some older players. In other instances, like the RBIs above, they stood on tradition that if the stat was not official, it did not exist. So remember the difference when you read an article like this. Elias is only interested in the accuracy of official numbers. The data presented by Baseball-Reference tries to show what actually happened. It’s only been about thirty years that cross checking to improve accuracy was possible. There is probably some number in Aaron’s career that is wrong. That probability is much lower for Pujols and Rodriguez.

All that being said, congratulations to Albert Pujols for reminding us of his greatness.

Low BABIP

Tom Tango notes that fielders are converting batted balls into outs at an unprecedented rate.

Since start of 2020 season, fielders have converted into outs 71.1% of the 7630 balls of hit into play

In 2019, there was NO STRETCH where fielders converted as many plays into outs. The average was 69.1%

TangoTiger.com

Tom makes some suggestions as to why, and the one that caught my eye was this:

I asked Tom if this included openers, and here’s his response:

So I looked at BABIP against starting pitchers by inning. (BABIP is basically 1-DER, and easier for me to calculate.) Here is 2020 compared to the previous 10 season by inning, when the starter is pitching.

Season Inning Plate App At Bats BIP Hits BIP AB Batting Avg BABIP

Previous 10 Years 7 62947 57551 13000 44301 0.257 0.293

As you can see, BABIP is lower in 2020 in every inning for starters, but the first two innings are off the charts. This might suggest that openers are making the difference. I also can believe that since starters know they are not going deep in games, they don’t need to hold back to have something left in the tank for the seventh inning.

Prime Time

Bill James conducts comes at the range of the peak seasons of hitters from a new angle (subscription may be required). This study confirms many other studies over the years that the peak ages for players lie in the seasonal age 25-29 years, with most likely peak at age 27.

When I was in college I had a conversation with a crew coach about the Olympics. There was a time when people who coached sports were considered professionals and were not allowed to compete in the Olympics. This made it tough for rowers to compete after college, as most people needed to work full time jobs, which left little time for training. The coach pointed out to me that rowers peaked at age 27, so at least in the US, most crew competitors did not have a chance to reach that peak competitively. That had changed by the time we had the conversation (around 1980), so that one could coach but not compete for money and still be considered an amateur.

A few years later, when I started reading the Baseball Abstracts, I was not surprised when I read that peak age in baseball was also 27. Well into the 1990s, however, I heard people in the business say that the peak age was 30. This was one thing that led to owners making a number of bad free agent signings, and it was to the advantage of the players not to knock down the myth. If peak age 30, six years to free agency makes sense. If peak age is 27, then most players will be past their primes when they get a chance to market themselves to teams. Now that front office understand when players peak, they have become masters of manipulating service time to capture peak seasons under team control. In the next CBA, the MLBPA should really concentrate on moving free agency to at most the player’s peak seasons.

One way might be five or six years of team control. That would count both major and minor league time with the organization. So an eighteen year old is drafted, plays his first full season at 19. That would be year one. He would be a free agent after his age 23 season. Drafting someone out of college at age 22 would make that person a free agent after age 27. This would encourage teams to bring up their best players to the majors as soon as possible.

I suspect it might hurt players coming out of high school. Of course, with MLB likely to contract the minor leagues, competitive independent leagues might spring up with local, young stars, similar to the industrial leagues of the early part of the twentieth century.
