Padres Done?

Matt Calkins writes the obituary for the 2015 Padres:

Perhaps it is fitting that the Padres’ nadir came at the hands of the Phillies. After winning 102 games in 2011, Philadelphia refused to trade any of its former All-Stars when they actually had value, and ended up being stuck with their mammoth contracts for years to come. Now 45-67, the Phillies are headed for their fourth straight season sans a winning record.

The Padres, meanwhile, are en route to their fifth straight losing season. And unlike the Phillies, they didn’t win the World Series in 2008 or 100-plus games three years later.

What they do have is an array of assets that, if dealt, could have helped set the team up for the future. But they traded nobody — and now they are going nowhere.

People have complained over the years about the Marlins breaking up their teams too quickly, but Miami does seem to build back into contention fairly quickly. In some of those years, I thought the Marlins put together a good team, but bad luck derailed him. A team can do everything right, and just by a roll of the dice wind up with a losing record. It’s quite possible the Padres front office believes this about their team.
