Bruce Heads East

The Mariners traded Jay Bruce to the Phillies:

The former All-Star was traded by the Seattle Mariners on Sunday in a deal that will cost the Phillies just $2.75 million over the next 1½ seasons.

“I get to go somewhere I have a chance to win,” the 32-year-old outfielder said, “and at this point in my career, that’s pretty paramount for me.”

As part of the deal, Seattle agreed to pay the Phillies $18,567,204 next Jan. 15, offsetting most of the $21,317,204 remaining in the $39 million, three-year contract Bruce agreed to with the New York Mets in January 2018.

Bruce was a nothing but power hitter for the Mariners, with 25 of his 35 hits going for extra bases. They do come at a high cost in outs, as Bruce’s OBP was just .283.

The Mariners get Jake Scheiner. He’s a 23-year-old in A Ball, and his batting stats are not that impressive. It seems the Mariners were basically willing to give away Bruce.

Hard to see that Bruce is what the Phillies need – he’ll hit some HRs and add a little lefthand balance but he’s just really not that good anymore
