The Non-Competitive American League

I find the American League somewhat disappointing this season. On the upside, the Twins and the Rays are doing very well. The Yankees and Astros keep winning despite sustaining injuries to some of their best players. The rest of the league is just meh.

The Red Sox, Indians, and Athletics are good teams that are hovering around .500. There are five teams that sit at least 17 games out of first place two months into the season. This whole idea of allowing poor play to build up the farm system is a good strategy if a couple of teams at a time are trying it. When five or six teams go the route, most are not going to get a very high draft pick. There is only one number one pick.

I often call for eliminating the draft, and this is another reason to do so. If there is no draft, if teams have to go out and sign and compete for amateurs, there would be no reason to play poorly for an extended length of time.
