It looks like the Blue Jays agreed to trade Eric Sogard to the Rays. Through the end of the 2018 season, Sogard batted .238/.309/.314. This year, his numbers stand at .300/.362/.477 in 323 PA. Does anyone actually believe this is a real improvement for a seasonal age 33 hitter? I don’t see anything in his batted ball data that shows an improvement.* I don’t see anything in his plate discipline, either.
*The most interesting thing is that he owns a very good line drive percentage over his career, yet that produces a low BA.
I have to believe that Sogard got a bit lucky this year, and is a prime candidate to regress toward his averages toward the end of the season. The Rays are a good analytics team, so they might be aware of something in the stats I don’t see. We’ll find out soon enough.
