This Date in 1920

All teams take part in games on May 29, 1920, with four stadiums hosting double headers for a total of twelve games. The Phillies beat the Giants in New York 2-1 for the low scoring game of the day. The other Philadelphia team takes part in the high scoring game of the day, as the Senators beat the home Athletics 11-5 in game one of their double header.

Ken Williams of the Browns wins best offensive game of the day as he goes two for two with a triple, home run, and two walks in a losing cause as the Tigers win the game 5-3. Williams may be the poster child for a late bloomer, as 1920 would be his first full season in the majors at seasonal age 30. He played in parts of four seasons from 1915 to 1919. He would go on to post a career slash line of .319/.393/.530, leading the AL in home runs and RBI in 1922 at age 32.

Ivy Olson of the Dodgers had about the best day at the plate, five for nine with a double, triple, and four RBI.

Walter Johnson of the Senators finished off a sweep of the Athletics as he wins a shutout 5-0 for best pitched game of the day. Johnson posts a game score of 86 as he allows just four hits and no walks while striking out seven. Johnson now leads the AL with 4.73 K per nine innings.

Babe Ruth hit his eleventh home run of month and of the season. The New York Tribune once again runs a comparison of Ruth’s 1920 to his record setting 1919 season, and the Babe is about one and a half months ahead of his 1919 pace at this point. If you lived through Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa chasing Roger Maris in 1998, you understand the excitement here.

Gaffe of the day goes to Doc Lavan of the Cardinals who tried to steal third base with the base occupied.
