Perez Breaks Bench

Salvador Perez set a record with his 46th home run Monday afternoon, a mark held by Johnny Bench:

Perez hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning, topping Bench’s total from 1970 for the most by a player who played at least 75% of his team’s games at catcher.

That’s an interesting way of framing a record. While much spilt data is unavailable before 1974, the Tattersall/McConnell Home Run Log is now available at Baseball-Reference.com, and has the position played for each home run. So we should know the most home runs hit as a catcher, which is 42 by Javy Lopez in 2003. Bench used to have the record with 40 in 1970, but Todd Hundley exceeded that with 41 in 1996, and Mike Piazza it 40 in 1997 and 1999. Perez hit 31 as a catcher this season, so this record is a bit of a stretch.
