Stuck in the Middle With You

The Rangers will be playing Marcus Semien at second base as they agree to a deal with shortstop Corey Seager:

Shortstop Corey Seager and the Texas Rangers are in agreement on a 10-year, $325 million deal, sources familiar with the situation told ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Monday.

The Rangers, looking to capitalize on their new ballpark and return to prominence after five consecutive losing seasons, have committed $556 million to three players in a span of hours. Seager’s deal came one day after the Rangers signed second baseman Marcus Semien to a seven-year, $175 million contract and starting pitcher Jon Gray to a four-year, $56 million contract.

Seager does have problems staying healthy. I project him to 28.2 WAR over the ten years of the contract, but given the money it looks like the Rangers are projecting him at about 35 WAR. Still, like with Scherzer, that sets the price per WAR high.

The Baseball Musings Batter Rankings place Seager as the eighth best hitter in MLB at the moment. He still has two year left in his prime, which usually attracts high value.

The Rangers look very strong up the middle right now, and that’s often a sign of a very good team.
