What’s Your Price For Flight?

The Twins move to shore up their middle by signing catcher Christian Vazquez to a two-year, $30 million deal:

The Twins finished third in the AL Central after experiencing an injury-plagued year though their starter at catcher, Gary Sanchez played in 128 games, including 80 at catcher. He hit just .205 with a .659 OPS. Ryan Jeffers started 56 games behind the plate but didn’t fare much better in the batter’s box, hitting just .208.

Twins pitching ranked 18th in ERA with those two players getting the bulk of the starts at catcher.

So it wasn’t the pressure of New York, Sanchez just failed to live up to expectations.

It’s a reasonable deal for the Twins. Vazquez will play 2023 as a 32-year-old, an age that is not kind to catchers. The money indicates the expect Vazquez to post about a three WAR over the life of the deal, which seems spot on. It also leaves them plenty of room to sign a good shortstop.

I wonder if any team will sign Sanchez. FanGraphs actually rates him as a decent defender, and there’s usually a spot for that kind of catcher.
