Zaidi Speaks

Farhan Zaidi of the Giants speaks about the Carlos Correa negotiations:

“I was on the phone with Scott Boras on the Monday that we did Carlos’ physical right when his plane landed in San Francisco at 5 p.m., and those conversations continued from that point, so any suggestion that this was an 11th-hour thing is just not accurate,” Zaidi said on a video call with a small group of beat reporters. “As soon as we had information, we shared it. We have a good working relationship with Scott Boras and his agency.”

I wonder if this concern was more widely known than the current negotiations indicate. Correa signed a short-term deal with the Twins due to the lack of a good long-term deal. Correa missed significant playing time from 2017-2019, but did manage to play a short COVID season, then stayed healthy in 2021. The unsettled collective bargaining agreement discussions likely played a role as well.

The Twins probably saw this on Correa’s physical, but were willing to ignore it on a short terms deal, and were willing to bring Correa back this season before he was priced out of that team. Maybe some team should swoop in on the Mets now with a shorter term, higher annual value contract. It may be reality for Correa and Boras that a very long term deal for Correa is just too big a risk for teams.
