New Faces – New York Yankees

The Yankees added the following new players to their projected opening day roster according to FanGraphs:

In some ways the Yankees simply stood pat. Rodon replace Jameson Taillon, which is actually a huge improvement. Kahnle is not that new, as he pitched for the Dodgers last season after working the Yankees bullpen previously.

There is good reason to stand pat on the bullpen, as it was excellent in 2022 before injuries limited the effectiveness of the relievers. The rotation pitched well, also.

The problem for the Yankees came from a lack of depth on offense. The Yankees did not address that issue. In addition, FanGraphs list DJ LeMahieu as a bench player, with the disappointing Josh Donaldson and Aaron Hicks still in the lineup. Of course, the Yankees started 2022 with the same formulation, and LeMahieu simply spelled someone else everyday, or played due to other’s injuries.

Look for more changes early in the season if not the pre-season. These might be internal if the Oswalds impressive in spring training, and a good spring by Isiah Kiner-Falefa might move him to third base.

While not technically a new face, Harrison Bader will get his first full season with the team.

Right now, the Yankees are great on the pitching side of the game, they may need to be due to the lack of top talent on offense.
