The Other Contreras

Todd Rosiak breaks down the catching position for the Brewers. While the acquisition of William Contreras should improve the position offensively, The pitching staff may get off to a better start as well:

To that end, Contreras jumped in with both feet after being traded on Dec. 12 by watching plenty of video of the Brewers’ returning pitchers.

In that regard he’s already way ahead of where projected backup Pedro Severino was last year coming into camp with the lockout having cut off communication between clubs and players.

Then when Severino was suspended at the end of camp, Caratini joined the Brewers at Wrigley Field on opening day and had to quite literally begin learning his new pitchers on the fly.

It was a process that Caratini said took several weeks.

With Caratini as the backup, pitchers and catchers should be in sync at the start of the regular season.

Rosiak also goes into detail about the minor league depth at the position as well. It’s always a good thing to be heavy with talent at up the middle positions. Players who can hit might move to less demanding defensive positions. The better catchers make excellent trade chips.
