Best Batter Today

Pete Alonso of the Mets moves up to third place in the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. Alonso goes two for five with a home run in a 9-3 win over the Marlins. Alonso has been all power so far in 2023, with five of his seven hits going for extra bases, four of them home runs.

Freddie Freeman of the Dodgers remains in first place as he singles and walks in a 6-3 Diamondbacks win. Mike Trout of the Angels gains some ground on first place as he homers in four trips, but the Blue Jays prevail 4-3. Yordan Alvarez of the Astros drops to fourth place after drawing two walks in a 3-2 Twins win, while Aaron Judge of the Yankees drops to fifth place as he goes 0 for 4 with a walk in a 7-6 Orioles victory.

Luis Robert of the White Sox posts a game score of 79, the best in the majors on Friday. He goes three for five with two home runs, but the Pirates prevail 13-9 in a slugfest. Note that in the same game Bryan Reynolds of the Pirates posted a 78 as he missed the cycle by a double, and Connor Joe game in at 75 with a four for five day.

The Pirates stand 5-2 early in the season. Reynolds is a big part of that surge. He is making himself more tradable by getting off to a great start, but also less tradable as continued success by the team means he may want to stay. Either way, the Pirates are in an excellent spot with the slugger.
