Late Bloomer

The Blue Jays signed ageless wonder Justin Turner to a one-year deal:

The Toronto Blue Jays and Justin Turner have agreed to a one-year deal worth $13 million, the team announced Tuesday.

Turner can make an additional $1.5 million in bonuses, according to multiple reports.

The Blue Jays had been linked with high-profile free agents and potential trade targets earlier this offseason but instead have added multiple veterans on one-year deals. Toronto also brought back outfielder Kevin Kiermaier and added utility infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa last month.

There is nothing wrong with this type of deal when a team has a young, solid core, and the Blue Jays have that.

Turner turned out to be a late bloomer. He didn’t post his first season over one fWAR until age 29, when he earned a 3.4 fWAR in his first year with the Dodgers. He then proceeded a WAR in at least the high threes in every full season until age 37. His 30’s look like what a young star might produce in his 20s.

The decline set in the last two seasons, and that allows the Jays to pay him as a bit better than a one WAR player. It’s possible that at seasonal age 39 his bat goes silent, but the upside risk is probably worth it.
