Two for Garcia

Adolis Garcia waited out the Rangers, and received a two-year deal rather than going to arbitration:

García was the only Rangers player eligible for salary arbitration who didn’t reach a deal before last month’s deadline. An arbitration hearing had been scheduled for Thursday before the agreement was reached.

The two-time All-Star slugger, who set an MLB postseason record with 22 RBIs last fall, had requested $6.9 million and Texas offered $5 million. That was the widest gap among the 23 players around the league who exchanged salary proposals with their teams.

Go Garcia probably did slightly better than going through the contentious arbitration process. It’s a good deal for the Rangers. Garcia is a solid hitter coming off his best season. He’s also going into the decline phase of his career. He will play 2024 as a 31-year-old, so he may not get a big free-agent pay day. With this deal, he should be set for life.

Note that a lot of free agent deals are are going down to the wire. That’s good for both sides, as the best deals come at the last minute.
