Best Batter Today

Aaron Judge of the Yankees ends an impressive May with a bang. He went three for four with two home runs and three RBI to stay atop the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. His game score of 81 tied with Christian Yelich of the Brewers for second highest of the day. The two homers brought Judge’s May total of extra-base hits to 26, tying him with Ty Cobb for the most EXBH in May since 1920, the home run era. Yankees teammate Juan Soto went one for four in the 6-2 win over the Giants to remain in second place.

Jose Ramirez of the Guardians held third place with a single and a walk in a 7-1 over the Nationals.

Slots four and five saw changes based on Friday’s games. Gunnar Henderson of the Orioles reached base three times in five PA with a single and two walks to move into fourth place. Baltimore beat Tampa Bay 3-1. Henderson, in his third season in the majors, has a steady BA in the upper .250s, but this year bumped up both his OBP and slugging percentages to becomes one of the best young hitters in the game. Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers returns to the top five as he drew a walk in a 4-1 Rockies win. Four through ten are very tightly bunched right now, so a poor game can drop players, and an okay game can raise batters.

The best game score of the day belonged to Jesus Sanchez of the Marlins, an 82. He went three for three with a walk, two doubles, and a home run in an 8-2 win over the Rangers. Sanchez is slugging just .355 on the season, with one third of his extra-base hits recorded on Friday.
