Best Batter Today

Aaron Judge of the Yankees posts another multi-extra-base hit game to remain on top of the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. He went three for four with a double and home run in a 6-4 win over the Dodgers. He leads his injured teammate, Juan Soto, by 26 points.

Jose Ramirez of the Guardians stands third after a two for five with a double in a 6-3 win over the Marlins. Gunnar Henderson of Orioles ranks fifth as he posted a two for four with a walk and a double. Baltimore beat Tampa Bay 9-2 in a game in which the Orioles hit three triples.

Yordan Alvarez of the Astros sits fourth after drawing two walks in a 9-7 Angels win. LAnaheim wins on a two-run walk off home run by Logan O’Hoppe, part of a four for five day for the Angels catcher that also included a double. All that added up to a game-score of 79, the highest on the day.

The home run ball was initially in the glove of Trey Cabbage as he leaped to make a catch at the stands in the leftfield corner, but his arm hit the wall and the ball fell out of his glove:

“I caught it and when I hit the wall, it just jarred itself loose somehow. I had it in the glove and when I hit the brick behind the pad, it just flipped out. But I had it,” said Cabbage, who came into the game in the bottom of the sixth when third baseman Alex Bregman left after being hit by a pitch in the left hand in the top of the inning. Mauricio Dubón moved from left to third.

It was the first walkoff hit for O’Hoppe, and the first Angels’ walkoff homer in nearly two years. It was also his second four-hit game of the season.

O’Hoppe is having a pretty good year at the plate, with a .269/.322/.466 slash line after missing most of 2023 with an injury. His early season departure last year was the first blow that led to a very disappointing season for the team.
