Rays Win

The Rays beat the Yankees 5-3 to assure they will go into the last scheduled day of the season no worse than tied for the AL Wild Card lead. A couple of three-baggers helped them win. Evan Longoria started a bases loaded triple play in the top of the sixth inning, which stopped a Yankees rally. Then Matt Joyce hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to give the Rays a lead they would not relinquish. Former teammate Rafael Soriano gave up the three runs.

The Rays are 16-10 in September, a very good, but not a blow you away record. It shows you just how far the Red Sox have fallen. Boston lead Baltimore 8-6 in the top of the ninth after the Orioles score two in the bottom of the eighth.

The Rays are 5-1 against the Red Sox in September, too, so their non-Sox record is weak. They made up half the ground by beating up on Boston, and the other half by being mediocre while the Sox were really terrible.
