Mr. Novemeber

Brett Gardner singles with two out in the bottom of the eighth, bringing up Derek Jeter. On the first pitch, Gardner takes off for second, and Jeter uses his patented opposite field swing to send a long fly ball to right. It just doesn’t have the distance, however, as Don Kelly catches it for the third out. Joaquin Benoit gives up three hits and a walk, but he gets five outs and holds the lead for Valverde in the ninth.

Mariano Rivera is on to pitch the ninth for the Yankees.

Update: Rivera throws five pitches, all strikes, and breaks two bats for a quick 1-2-3 ninth. The Tigers are three outs away from the ALCS.
