Wrist at Risk

Carl Crawford underwent wrist surgery:

General manager Ben Cherington says Crawford is expected to resume hitting at some point in spring training and be ready early in the season. He says the team hasn’t completely ruled out Crawford’s availability for the opener.

Cherington says Crawford started hitting more actively recently, and he felt pain in the wrist. The surgery was performed in Arizona.

I wonder if this was bothering him at a low level in 2011? That could explain his fall-off in performance Wrist injuries are very tough on hitters, and often when they heal, the batter doesn’t recover his stroke right away. My daughter is a violinist, and after she broke her wrist, the scar tissue made it difficult for her to bow properly. I can imagine what it would do to a ball player that has to absorb the contact of bat against ball.

If it was bothering him in 2011 and the Doctors missed the fact he had torn cartilage which delayed the surgery to the end of January, someone needs to be fired.

According to the Red Sox, the wrist was not bothering him, but who knows. It could be Crawford overdid his workouts in an effort to have a better 2012.

Wrist injuries tend to linger for a year even after players come back, so it probably hinders him in 2012. It’s also his left throwing wrist, and given his 1 assist in Friendly Fenway (an assist haven for LF’ers), which was on a cut-off, no improvement should be expected there.

Red Sox have very little depth in OF with Sweeney, MacDonald and converted IF’er Aviles expected to cover RF (Kalish out to start the season), and now LF for a time.

Just saw a tweet that Cherington said it was bothering him at the end of last year. If so, someone has a lot of explaining to do as to why an MRI was not done earlier, assuming it was not done. I mean, why wait to have the surgery a month before ST?

after years and YEARS of listening to the sawx media and fans berate (on a DAILY basis, if you listen to the local radio shows , like weei , and others) jd drew and his tremendously horrible contract , and how he didn’t live up to expectations , etc ,
only to see them “finally rid” themselves of that contract , by jumping up on top of THIS dead horse , is not only amusingly refreshing , but ensures that the “soap opera” continues , here in the northeast .

haha , you big buffoons .
you’re like the rich relatives , who lucked into the lottery . and are just too stupid
to figure out how to lose all that wealth quickly enough , and spare us all the drama .

at least jd drew eventually got a big hit for the sawx .

crawford will have to prove himself .
