Goodbye, Carlos

Carlos Guillen announced his retirement. Carlos had an interesting career. In his first six seasons, all with Seattle, he hit like a shortstop. He posted a decent OBP, but showed little power, slugging .383. He joined the Tigers at age 28, and promptly slugged .542, and averaged .476 in his career with Detroit. Was it the change of venue, or did some coach change his swing?

He defensive value diminished over time, but one advantage of starting at shortstop is there’s plenty of room to move down the defensive spectrum. Carlos played all the infield positions as well as left field and designated hitter. Numerous injuries finally took their toll on him, however. Best of luck to him in retirement!
