Feldman to the Cubs

The Cubs signed Scott Feldman to a one-year, $6 million contract:

Hoyer said Feldman was “one of the most unlucky pitchers in the game last year.” Feldman tied left-hander Derek Holland for the Rangers’ lead in unearned runs allowed with nine. Holland had 51 2/3 innings more than Feldman.

I’m not sure that’s what Hoyer had in mind. Feldman’s ERA came in at 5.09, but his FIP was just 3.81. His strikeout and walk rate were better than in 2011, when his ERA was 3.94. FanGraphs valued his 2012 season at $10 million.

Feldman did get an unusually high percentage of balls on the ground in 2011. With a lower rate in 2012, Feldman’s infield defense could not help him as much. The Cubs are an average defensive team, so Scott won’t get too much help there anyway. Scott also allowed power with men on base. That can lead to a high ERA, but given the small sample size it could also be a bit random.

I like the gamble, however. Chicago saw past Feldman’s ERA and picked up a potentially good pitcher at a low price, just what I expect from that operation.
