Drew the Short Stick

The Red Sox signed Stephen Drew to a one-year deal:

The Drew signing will allow the Red Sox one more year to develop slick-fielding youngster Jose Iglesias. Drew’s deal is pending a physical.

We’ll see if Stephen is more popular than his brother in Boston.

It seems to me the Red Sox are still trying to walk the line between rebuilding and trying to win now. They must believe that Drew’s offense will more than make up for Jose’s defense. Maybe the Red Sox should accept that Jose is going to be Omar Vizquel or Ozzie Smith, take the defensive wins, and hope he develops the ability to get on base like those two greats did. Drew could get his hitting stroke back, but he’s playing 2013 as a 30 year old. I doubt his defense is going to get better, and I really don’t expect him to get close to his peak numbers. I like Drew, so I hope he plays well, but there’s a good chance the Red Sox just threw more money down their black hole at shortstop.
