Massive Tie Scenarios

Despite the disappointing outcome for the Yankees Thursday night, it wasn’t a bad day for the massive tie scenario in the AL Wild Card race. The Orioles won, and with the Angels hammering David Price early, the Rays lost. Baltimore gained on everyone ahead of them, and are now tied with Cleveland three games out. Even the Royal moved up a bit, and it’s almost time to put them into the race. The four way tie can still happen at 95 wins:

  • Orioles 21-2
  • Indians 21-2
  • Yankees 20-2
  • Rays 18-5

That’s best case. It’s more likely to happen if the Rays go 12-11, with the three teams above all losing just eight more games. The Royals would need to go undefeated to reach 95 wins.

The NL Central also had a good night, as the Reds downed the Cardinals 6-2. With the Pirates not playing, Cincinnati gained on both teams ahead of them, and the division can fall into a three-way tie with each team at a maximum of 99 wins.

The three way tie can happen at 99 wins:

  • Reds 20-1
  • Cardinals 19-3
  • Pirates 18-5

So to help the massive tie scenario along, here’s what I’d like to see on Friday:

  • Baltimore beats Chicago
  • Cleveland triumphs over the NY Mets
  • The New York Yankees defeat Boston
  • Cincinnati wins against the Los Angeles Dodgers
  • St. Louis defeats Pittsburgh
  • Tampa Bay falls to the Mariners

Note that my personal rooting interest favors the Pirates winning their 82nd game, but as far as the massive tie goes, I’d rather see the teams get as close as possible as soon as possible.
