Tough Save Blown

Terry Francona brought Clay Buchholz out for the ninth inning to try for the shutout with the Red Sox leading 3-0. He allowed the first two batters to reach, bringing up Miguel Cabrera. He left with 109 pitches thrown, so starting the ninth wasn’t a bad idea given how well he pitched up to that point. Francona brings on Jonathan Papelbon, who gives up a double to Cabrera that drives in two runs. With one out, he gives up a single to Jhonny Peralta that dribbled through the infield and tied the game. The Red Sox are coming to bat to try for the walk-off win.

Papelbon blows his fifth save of the season. The most for him in a season was six in 2006.

Update: The Red Sox win 4-3 when Detroit pitcher Robbie Weinhardt throws the ball away on a sacrifice by Marco Scutaro. The Red Sox had men on 1st and 2nd.

Shouldn’t have pitched to Cabrera. Tigers were without Damon, Ordonez, Guillen and Inge. Maddon would have walked the bases loaded and took his chances with the rest of the order.
