Max Scherzer struck out 13 batters through six innings against the Tigers. That leaves him seven short of the nine inning record with three innings to go. He has not walked the batter. The Nationals and Tigers are tied at one as Jordan Zimmermann is also pitching a good game. The Tigers run came on a rare home run by Jose Iglesias. Victor Martinez and Iglesias are the only Tigers not to strike out.
Update: Scherzer gets in trouble in the top of the seventh after the Nats takes a 2-1 lead. With Tigers on second and third and one out, Scherzer strikes out the last two batters, giving him fifteen for the game. He has thrown 90 pitches, 72 for strikes.
Update: Scherzer strikes out the side, all looking, in the eighth. That gives him 18 strikeouts for the game, a new personal record, and he breaks his own Nationals record. He is two strikeouts away from tying the nine inning record held by Roger Clemens (twice), Kerry Wood, and Randy Johnson. What they all have in common is 20 K and no walks. Scherzer has not walked a batter, either. We’ll see if he can break the record. The Nationals lead 3-1.
