Games of the Day

The Cardinals and Pirates try to break the tie for third place in the NL Central as Jack Flaherty takes on Trevor Williams. Flaherty makes his fourth start of the season against Pittsburgh. He is 1-1 with a 3.94 ERA as the Pirates hit three home runs in 16 innings against Flaherty. Williams is working on a 17 inning scoreless streak. He’s walked eight and struck out nine in that time period, not a good sign, but limited batters to 13 hits.

Houston finishes their interleague series with the Dodgers with Gerrit Cole facing Walker Buehler. Cole pitched about 62 fewer innings than last season, but with just two fewer strikeouts. Due to that impressive K rate, he allowed just 90 hits in 141 1/3 innings. Buehler owns a 2.70 ERA at home this season, where he walked just five batters in 43 1/3 innings.

Finally, the Red Sox go for a sweep of the Yankees with Masahiro Tanaka battling David Price. A win by the Red Sox would force the Yankees into needing an incredible comeback to take the division. Tanaka is 4-2 with a 4.09 ERA at Fenway Park for his career, with just eight walks allowed in 50 2/3 innings. Price is 2-6 against the Yankees since joining the Red Sox. He allowed 13 home runs in 47 innings.
