Yankees Can Power Trip

The Twins broadcast is pointing out a very interesting situation that’s developing. The Yankees don’t need to make their decision about which series they want to play until the regular season is over. If the Twins hold on to their 9-4 lead, due to the Monday night football game, the season won’t be over until early Tuesday evening. That means the Red Sox won’t know if they are starting in Anaheim on Wednesday or Thursday.

I suspect New York will pick Wednesday just to make their opponent play two days in a row, likely starting the series with their third starter. However, the Twins do have a weaker pitching staff than the Tigers, so maybe the Yankees want to force them to use their fourth starter. Either way, the Yankees can force the Red Sox and Angels to make last minute decisions and maybe play a day earlier than they were expecting.

Another reason the current setup is wrong. The Yankees waiting is poor sportsmanship as well. I know it is a business, but it is also a sport and as such it serves as a place to exhibit proper behavior for kids and society at large(no matter what C Barkley says). I was never a big Bowie Kuhn fan, but he did nothing that was not in the interest of the integrity of the game(that I can recall). I didn’t like it when he denied Finley his selling of the players(Blue, Rudi etc) but I did understand it. Kuhn’s concern seemed to be about the integrity of the game. The used car salesman has no such qualms-his only mantra is $$

    Uh.
Why is it poor sportsmanship? It’s legal, it improves their chances to win. I think it would be irresponsible not to use the advantage.

Legal does not equal ethical nor good sportsmanship. It also puts fans in a bind, not knowing when the series will begin. I am not harping on the Yankees, I dont like the system that is in place.
