Rob Neyer makes a fairly good argument that Derek Jeter will not pass Pete Rose on the all-time hit list. I’ll just add to that the case of Robin Yount. He was over 100 hits ahead of Pete Rose through their age 35 seasons (Jeter is 10th all time through that age) and only played two more seasons, finishing with 3142 hits. The difference with Jeter is so far, his ability to crank out a high number hasn’t fallen off. Yount’s decline started in his age 34 season. My guess is Jeter will finish in the top five, with a good chance of passing Musial and a slight chance of passing Aaron.

On the flip side-Jeter has the body type that tends to last longer than bulky players, hasn’t really declined yet, takes good care of himself, has expressed interest in playing for another 10 years,is strong mentally and has a relationship with his team that no other MLB player has.
