A Pair of Fives

Andrew McCutchen and Garrett Jones, batting three and four in the Pirates lineup Friday afternoon, each collected five hits and combined to score and drive in seven runs as Pittsburgh came back to beat the Cubs 10-6. Both homered, and Jones added a double.

This is the 21st time since 1957 (the start of the Day by Day Database) that two players for the same team collected at least five hits in a game. The Rangers were the last team to accomplish the feat on 4/15/2009. There have been long stretches in those 53 years where the feat was not accomplished. From 1971 to 1981 it happened just once, and after two occurrences in 1999, no double five-plus teammates happened until 2005.

The Pirates move to 4-0 against the Cubs this season. They’ve scored 28 runs and allowed 11. Pittsburgh moves 1/2 game ahead of Chicago into fourth place in the NL Central.
