Cy Catcher

Sam Mellinger posts on Miguel Olivo, ace whisperer.

We’ll never know if Greinke would have won the 2009 Cy Young without Olivo. We could argue about it, of course. And some might even argue that Greinke won the award in spite of Olivo.

But we do know this: On Monday, Olivo started at catcher for the Colorado Rockies, and Rockies ace Ubaldo Jimenez was filthy again.

Jimenez allowed four hits in a shutout win against San Francisco. He improved to 10-1 and lowered his major-league-leading ERA to an utterly absurd 0.78.

We also know that Olivo has caught 10 of Jimenez’s 11 starts — the lone exception being Jimenez’s start on opening day.

Zack Greinke is still pitching well, he’s just not getting enough support. He not quite as lights out as he was last season. Ubaldo Jimenez pitched well in 2009, just not as fantastically well as in 2010. Maybe Olivo does provide that little extra spark.
