Games of the Day

Josh Johnson and Roy Halladay start a night of superb pitching matchups as the Marlins and Phillies continue their series. You can compare them side by side here. Johnson both walks and strikes out batters at a higher rate, but the biggest difference is stamina. Halladay pitches over an inning more per start than Johnson.

Mat Latos and Johan Santana try to follow up Tuesday night’s 2-1 Mets win over the Padres with another pitching gem. Although Latos owns a higher ERA on the road, his opposition batting stats are better away from PETCO Park. The Baroque Rocker is striking out batters at his lowest rate since 2001, but he compensates by allowing home runs at one of the lowest rates of his career.

Shaun Marcum

Shaun Marcum and David Price battle in Tampa Bay as Toronto tries to recover from their two-hit Tuesday night. Marcum, a right-handed pitcher, has been deadly against LHB this season as they have a collective .169/.208/.237 slash line against him. That should work well against Tampa Bay with their cadre of lefties and switch hitters. Price is right at home where he allows a .180/.255/.273 slash line. He turns the opposition into Mario Mendoza.

Finally, the Cardinals at Dodgers provides us with Adam Wainwright against Clayton Kershaw. Like Marcum, Wainwright is better when the batter holds the platoon advantage this season. Undefeated at home, Adam is 3-3 on the road despite a 2.39 ERA. Kershaw walks about twice as many batters as Adam, but really keeps the power down at Dodger Stadium with a lower slugging percentage than OBP allowed.

Enjoy!
