Self Policing

I like Joe Maddon’s take on the B.J. Upton/Evan Longoria dust up:

But Maddon made it clear how he viewed the situation.

First, he said it was obvious Upton “just did not run as hard as he possibly could after the ball.”

Next, he said he encourages the players to police themselves, that several were “not pleased” with what took place on the field, and he considered this incident “a great example” of that type of enforcement.

Then he said of the whole episode: “I was watching how it unfolded, and I thought it was handled properly, and I was pleased with it.”

Also, B.J. and Evan appear to be good friends and were both conciliatory after the game. I think Maddon’s right here. He realizes it’s much easier to manage a team where the players take care of these kinds of problems.

Joe Maddon doesn’t look like much in the brains department–the glasses aren’t doing him any favors–but in my opinion he’s shown himself time and again to be a subtle, sophisticated manager of men.
